Dubai makes one kind of person rich. Find out, with your own numbers, whether it's you.
The tax saving is real and, for the right person, enormous. The rent is also real and it is enormous for everyone. This book does the arithmetic the brochures skip: how UAE personal and corporate tax actually work now, who gets rich (foreign income, a saving rate, a clean exit from home) and who doesn't (a modest salary paying Marina rent, the lifestyle mover, the off-plan flipper, the person who never really left), how to leave India's or the UK's tax net properly, what everything costs, how to set up a company and get the bank to say yes, what property does and doesn't do, and a five-number framework that tells you go, go after fixing X, or not yet.
- The full playbook (about 30 pages, phone or laptop)
- What Dubai actually is as an economy, and why that makes it a base, not a market
- The tax arithmetic: no personal tax, 9% corporate tax above AED 375k, Small Business Relief, qualifying free zone income and the de minimis trap, VAT, with a worked £150k example
- The five profiles that get rich and the six that don't, with the three things that separate them
- Residency properly: UAE visas and the 183/90-day tests; India's 182/120-day and deemed-residency rules and RNOR; the UK Statutory Residence Test, ties, split year and the five-year temporary non-residence rule; US citizens
- The cost side with a lean / comfortable / brochure table, setting up (free zone vs mainland, costs, the bank account problem, compliance), property without the hype (yields, fees, service charges, cycles, off-plan, five rules), the business playbook and the traps
- A five-number decision framework, a 30-day plan that ends in a written decision, and seven worksheets
What's inside
What Dubai actually is
A trading post that became a platform: the model, why the city is priced for the people it wants, why your status is conditional, why it's a base not a market.
The tax arithmetic
Personal tax, the corporate tax rules people miss (9%, relief, free zones, top-up tax, registration), VAT, a worked example and three caveats that cost real money.
Who gets rich, and who doesn't
The remote earner, the high earner who saves, the hub trader, the already-rich, the property investor (sometimes); the modest salary, the lifestyle mover, the off-plan speculator, the half-leaver, the domestic trader, the visa-dependent worker.
Residency, properly
UAE visas including Golden and remote-work; UAE tax residency tests and the certificate; leaving India's net (182/120 days, ₹15 lakh, deemed residency, RNOR); leaving the UK's (SRT, ties, split year, temporary non-residence); the US and Europe.
The cost side
Rent by area and how it's paid, the monthly table (lean, comfortable, brochure), school fees, and the saving-rate test.
Setting up
Free zone or mainland, year-one costs, the bank account as the hard part, compliance from day one, and the sequence.
Property without the hype
The honest case for and against: yields, fees, service charges, cycles (2008–09, 2014–20, 2021–), off-plan, mortgages, illiquidity, and five rules if you buy.
The business playbook, and the traps
Hard currency in, dirhams out; services first; use the position; keep the entity clean; compounding. Lifestyle inflation, debt and cheques, the year's rent, visa dependency, legal surprises, transience, the exit.
The life, and the decision framework
Heat, safety, culture, community, family, boredom, and the honest reason people stay. The five numbers scored out of ten: go, go after X, not yet.
The 30-day plan and worksheets
Your numbers, residency, setup and property, decide. Income by source, cost comparison, tax arithmetic, residency test, setup quotes, property check, the five numbers.
Is it for you?
Who it's for
- Founders, freelancers and remote earners, especially from India and the UK, who want the real numbers before they move.
- Salaried professionals weighing a Dubai offer who need to know whether a tax-free package leaves them richer after rent.
- Anyone being sold Dubai property or a Dubai lifestyle by someone paid when they buy.
- People already in Dubai who suspect they are saving less than they expected and want to know why.
Not for you if
- You want to be told Dubai will make you rich. It won't; a specific set of circumstances will, and the book tells you whether you have them.
- You want tax or legal advice for your case. The book gives you the framework and the questions; it tells you to pay an adviser at both ends in year one, and makes that hour ten times shorter.
- You're moving for the weather and the safety and don't care about the money. Fine, and the book says so; it just isn't the brochure's reason.
Who's behind this
Why Dubai Makes People Rich (and Who It Doesn't) is written by Manthan Bhendkar, founder of Asendify, whose playbooks take one decision, strip out the hype, and give you the numbers and a method.
It grew out of the research for his own planned move: an Indian founder with clients in the UK and US, running the UAE tax rules, India's residency tests, real rental listings and free zone quotes to find out whether the move would actually leave him richer. The result is the book he wished existed: the honest arithmetic, the profiles on both sides of it, and a framework that is willing to say 'not yet'.
Questions
Is Dubai really tax-free?
For individuals, yes: no income, capital gains, dividend or inheritance tax. For companies, no longer: a 9% corporate tax applies on profit above AED 375,000, with Small Business Relief for revenue up to AED 3 million (currently to end-2026) and 0% for qualifying free zone income if you meet substance and audit conditions. Part 2 has the rules and a worked example.
I'm Indian / British. Will moving actually stop my home tax?
Only if you meet your home country's non-residence test on the facts of your life. Part 5 covers India's 182/120-day rules, the ₹15 lakh thresholds, deemed residency and RNOR, and the UK's Statutory Residence Test, ties, split year and the five-year temporary non-residence rule. The commonest expensive mistake is half-leaving.
How much do I need to earn for it to be worth it?
The book gives a saving-rate test rather than a single number, but as a rough guide: under about £60,000 a year of income from outside the UAE, the tax saving rarely beats Dubai's cost of living; at £100,000+ it usually does; at £250,000+ the rent is a rounding error. Part 6 and Worksheet 2 do it with your figures.
Should I buy property?
Not in year one, and not off-plan to flip. Part 8 gives the honest case both ways (yields, 4% DLD fee, service charges, cycles including 2008–09 and 2014–20, off-plan risk, illiquidity) and five rules if you do buy.
What counts as results for the guarantee?
By day 30: all seven worksheets completed with real figures (your income, actual listings, free zone quotes), both tax consultations done, the five-number score computed, and a written decision with dates, whether that decision is go, go after a fix, or not yet.
