Do you pay income tax if you live in Dubai?
No. The UAE has no personal income tax, so a UAE tax resident pays nothing to the UAE on a salary, dividends from their own company or gains on personal investments. But since mid-2023 UAE businesses pay a 9% federal corporate tax on taxable profit above AED 375,000, and the personal saving only exists if you have genuinely left your home country's tax system. This is general education, not financial or legal advice.

What individuals pay (and don't)
For an individual who is tax resident in the UAE, there is currently:
- no personal income tax on salary;
- no capital gains tax on personal investments;
- no tax on dividends or interest received personally;
- no inheritance tax and no wealth tax.
That is the headline people move for, and it is true. What it doesn't tell you is how the rules for companies and for your home country change the real number.
Corporate tax: the part people miss
The UAE introduced a federal corporate tax for financial years starting on or after 1 June 2023. In outline:
- 0% on taxable profit up to AED 375,000 a year, and 9% on profit above that (Gulf News).
- Small Business Relief: a resident business with revenue of AED 3 million or less can elect to be treated as having no taxable income, for tax periods ending on or before 31 December 2026 (Federal Tax Authority). Check whether it has been extended before you rely on it.
- Free zones: a "Qualifying Free Zone Person" can pay 0% on qualifying income and 9% on the rest, but only with real substance in the zone, audited accounts and non-qualifying revenue kept under a small limit (FTA Free Zone Persons guide).
- Registration is mandatory for companies, including free zone companies, even if the expected tax is zero. Missing the deadline can bring a fine.

VAT still applies to spending
The UAE charges 5% VAT on most goods and services. Businesses must register once taxable supplies pass AED 375,000 a year. Services exported to customers outside the GCC are generally zero-rated, which is why many service businesses selling abroad barely notice it.
The catch: your home country may still tax you
Moving your company to Dubai does not, by itself, move you out of your home country's tax net. Three common traps:
- Residence: if you're still tax resident at home (for example, under the UK's statutory residence test), you're still a taxpayer there. Check your home country's rules and take professional advice.
- Substance: a free zone company with no real staff or office, run by someone who actually lives elsewhere, may fail substance tests in both places.
- US citizens are taxed by the US wherever they live. Dubai can reduce the bill but doesn't remove it.
Who actually comes out ahead
The saving depends on income versus costs. Dubai rent, licences, visas, audits and school fees are real. On a modest salary, the tax you save can be eaten by rent. On high, internationally earned income, the saving can be large and the costs comparatively small.
A useful way to decide:
- Write your income by source (salary, clients abroad, investments).
- Estimate what you pay in tax at home now.
- Get real quotes for a Dubai licence, visa, accounting and audit.
- Add a realistic year of rent and living costs.
- Confirm with an adviser that you'd genuinely stop being tax resident at home.
If the number still works after step 5, the tax argument is real for you. If it only works on the brochure, it isn't.
Key takeaways
- No personal income tax in the UAE: salary, personal dividends and investment gains are not taxed there.
- Companies pay 9% on profit above AED 375,000, with reliefs for small businesses and qualifying free zone income.
- 5% VAT applies to most spending.
- You only save if you have really left your home country's tax net.
- Costs can cancel the saving at lower incomes. Run the numbers first.
FAQ
Do expats pay tax on their salary in Dubai?
Not to the UAE. Your home country may still tax you if you remain resident there, and US citizens are taxed by the US on worldwide income.
Is there tax on a business in Dubai?
Yes. Since 2023 there's a 9% federal corporate tax on taxable profit above AED 375,000, with Small Business Relief and free zone rules that can reduce it. Companies must register even if they owe nothing.
Do I need a tax adviser to move to Dubai?
For anything beyond a simple salaried job, it's sensible. Residence rules at home, company substance and free zone conditions are where people lose money, and they depend on your specific facts.
